Amanda Nunes does not have a brother. But she has two elder sisters named Valdirene and Vanessa Nunes. 

Growing up, Amanda and her sisters stayed with their mother after their parents separated when she was just 4 years old.

It was at the age of 16 that her life took a pivotal turn. Her sister Vanessa gave her an invitation to her dojo, which enabled Amanda to embark on her Brazilian jiu-jitsu journey.

Initially, she was living with Vanessa in an apartment that was pretty far away from her gym. It was a time of great struggle for the siblings.

However, her dedicated coach came to her aid and offered her a place to stay nearby. This decision proved instrumental in shaping her career.

As the lone female among her peers and with the gym logo bearing two lions, Amanda’s coach and fellow students bestowed upon her the nickname “Leoa” (meaning lioness in Portuguese).

Even today, this moniker remains an integral part of her identity.

Her two sisters are not well-known in the public. But they adore and are the staunchest supporters of their younger siblings.

The fighter is always finding ways to be with her family, who are living back in Brazil.

Sadly, she lost her cousin’s sister on May 17, 2026.

Amanda Nunes is married to Nina Nunes Ansaroff, another UFC fighter. Nina Ansaroff is originally from Weston, Florida. She was a former professional MMA fighter who fought in the UFC’s strawweight division.

Nina Nunes holds a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo as well as a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

She began using the surname Nunes in the UFC in April 2026. Amanda has given credit to the UFC for helping her find love.
