John McVay: Early Life and Education

The former American Head Coach John was born on January 5, 1931. He was born in Bellaire, Ohio, USA.

Later, he moved to Massillon and attended Massillon Washington High School. In High School, he played football for High School Team.

After completing High School, McVay attended Miami University for further studies. He was very athletic right from his childhood. He played college football at Miami University.

Additionally, McVay had a Bachelors’s degree in Education and a Masters’s degree in School Administration.

Starting of John McVay’s Football Career

It was at Tigertown that he got his first taste of organized football. Bud Houghton coached him for his first two years on the varsity team.

However, when Chuck Mather came into town for his senior year in High School in 1948, he brought a shift in leadership.

Mather’s coaching created the spark that would eventually begin McVay’s long football career.

During the High School final year, which was also McVay’s first season, Mather made a 9-1 record and placed first in the Associated Press State Poll. It was just ahead of Canton McKinely, who had also finished 9-1.

John played a vital role in this phenomenal success. As a result, he was named for his efforts as 2nd Team All-Ohio at the center position.

At the same time, McVay was also a good student at Massillon and was inducted into the National Honor Society.

As already mentioned, John played college football at Miami University. He played his initial two years under Woody Hayes. Hayes completed with a 9-1 and departed for Ohio State during his second year.  

Following that, John played under Ara Parseghian. He was a two-time MVP for Miami and amassed 15 wins in 19 starts.

Additionally, he was also selected as an All-Mid-American Conference center. Further, John McVay served as a team captain during his senior year.

When did John McVay Start as a Coach?

McVay got his first coaching assignment at Franklin High School in 1956 and stayed for a year there. Prior to this, he worked as an assistant at Lancaster HS for three years.

After that, The Ohio native served as the head coach at the Canton Central Catholic. He stayed there for five years. His team showed extraordinary performances. In 1959, his team finished 7th in the state.

When he departed from the Canton Central Catholic, he was the most successful coach ever at Central. Today, the Central has a scholarship in the name of McVay to show their honor towards him.

After the Canton Central Catholic, John headed towards the Universities. His first stop was Michigan State University.

At Michigan, firstly, he served under the legendary coach Duffy Daugherty. Later, after three years, i.e., in 1965, he was hired as a head coach at the University of Dayton.

He coached at Dayton for eight years. In 1972, he recorded a record of 37-41-3, finishing 8-2, which was one of the best records in the Flyers’ history.

John McVay in the NFL

In 1974, John McVay was hired as the head coach of the World Football League Memphis Southmen, which was also the league’s inaugural season.

He had a respectful 24–7 record at Memphis until the league dissolved in 1975.

John then joined the NFL’s New York Giants as an assistant coach of research and development in 1976. There, he worked under fellow Miami alumni Bill Arnsparger.

Arnsparger was removed in late October after seven defeats, and McVay was promoted. From 1976 to 1978, he had a hard time struggling with the franchise in transition.

His first NFL season had three rookie quarterbacks on the roster. John Mcvay guided the New York Giants for three seasons. After the 1978 season, his contract with the Giants was not renewed.

John’s years with the Giants were his final years as a coach. In his 20 years career as a coach, John had won 117 games, faced 85 losses, and had six ties.

In 1980, John McVay started to work in the office in an administrative position with the San Fransisco 49ers.

Further, he also worked together with the head coach, Bill Walsh, who is one of the most successful coaches in NFL history.

Additionally, as a vice president of football operations, John McVay worked for five Super Bowl-winning seasons.

John retired from the 49ers in 1996. However, later, he agreed to come back in 1998 and stayed for five more years.

John McVay has had many proud moments in his overall playing, coaching, and administrative career.

He was named NFL Executive of the Year in 1989. Further, McVay has also been inducted into numerous halls of fame.

John was inducted into the Massillon High School Wall of Champions in 1963 (charter member), Massillon High School Distinguished Citizen in 1996, and Massillon High School Tiger Football  Hall of Fame in 2016.

Further, John was inducted to the Stark County, Ohio, High School Hall of Fame in 2005 and Miami of Ohio University Football Red Hawks in 1977

Additionally, John was also inducted into the San Francisco 49ers, in 2013. Recently he was inducted into the San Francisco Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.

Sean is also the youngest head coach in contemporary NFL history, having taken over as head coach of the Rams in 2017 at the age of 30.

He is also the youngest head mentor in NFL history to qualify for the playoffs, win a playoff game, play in the Super Bowl, and be voted the AP NFL Coach of the Year.

John has seen things from both ends of the spectrum. One as a coach and one from the front office standpoint. As a result, he has experience and perspective that is very helpful to .

On the other hand, John McVay is also incredibly proud of his grandson. Looking at Sean, he says that he wasn’t as composed as Sean.

He exclaims Sean is so “darn cool,” whereas he is a “nervous wreck”.
