Later, in 2012, he signed a two-year, entry-level contract with Edmonton Oilers. On January 21, 2013, he made his NHL debut against the Vancouver Canucks.

The Oilers traded Schultz to the Pittsburgh Penguins in February 2016.

His remarkable performance helped the team to become the Stanley Cup Champion in 2016 and 2017.

Moreover, he also played for Washington Capitals for two years before agreeing to a two-year, $6 million contract with the Seattle Kraken on July 13, 2026.
