Miguel Arturo Layún Prado shortly Miguel Layún was born in Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico to his father, Miguel Layún Sr. and mother, Maribel Prado.

Veracruz
Layún was first seen playing professionally in Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, in his home state, in 2006.
In 2007, he debuted in the Primera Division at the Clausura 2007 tournament against another home club Necaxa. The match ended in a draw of 1 – 1.
He stayed on the Veracruz club until the end of 2009. Veracruz ultimately was relegated into the second division.
Layún scored his only goal with Veracruz against the match with Tampico Madero on 25th February 2009.
Atalanta
After a successful trial with the Italian Club Atalanta, he transferred from his previous club, Veracruz, for a huge price of €625,000. This move made him the only player of Mexico to have played in Series A.
Layún made his league appearance with Atalanta against Chievo’s match at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi in Verona as a substitute for Jamie Valdes.
His second appearance was against the club, Cagliari, again as a substitute for Nicola Madonna in the match’s 66th minute.
They lost the match 3-0. Those two appearances were the only appearances Miguel made for that season.
América
By 2010, Layún was transferred to Club América for the Clausura 2010 tournament. He was the second signing of the club for the winter transfer window.
Layún scored his first goal for América in May 2010 during the first leg of the quarter-final match against Toluca. The match ended in a 2-2 draw at the Estadio Azteca.
In the Clausura 2013 final, Layún scored the final penalty shoot-out against Cruz Azul and won his career’s first-ever championship of his entire career.
He was a substitute for Diego Reyes in the first half of the match.
Before the Apertura 2014, Layún was picked as one of the four players who would captain the club. Against the league match against the Puebla, América won the match 4 – 0, captained by Layun.
Layún also impressively scored all 4 goals in a single match against Santos Laguna. Miguel again captained América to the league title, followed by a victory over Tigres UNAL in the finals.
Watford
Layún ascended to the La Liga Club Granada on a five-year deal. He was sent to another club, an English Championship Club, Watford, on loan for the remainder.
Later signed a 4 year deal with Watford and was given the prestigious number 7 shirt. He made his championship debut the day after the news of his signing surfaced. He played all ninety minutes but lost to Huddersfield Town 3-2.

12th September 2015 was the day he debuted for the club, and his team won 3 – 1 over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Champions League.

In July 2018, Layún joined the Villareal on a three-year deal. He debuted this team as a substitute for Santi Carzola in the 75th minute against Girona. Villareal lost the match 1 – 0.
Monterrey
Many European teams like Celta de Vigo and Milan were interested in Miguel after his other clubs’ performances, but he decided to go for Monterrey.
He decided that it was financially and personally better to stay back in Mexico and play high-level football. So he moved to Monterrey in 2019.
Return to América
The professional football player signed a one-year deal with Club América on July 3, 2026.
International Career
Miguel Layún was first drafted for the national team in 2013. He was called by the national coach Jose Manual de la Torre after his impressive performances for Club América during the Clausura Tournaments.
Notably, Miguel Layún was a part of Mexico’s national team that played in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup that happened in the United States of America.
He made his debut in the international game against Canada at the CenturyLink Field in Seattle.
