Mike Maddux, the brother of Greg Maddux, started his professional coaching career as a pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2002 after 15 years of a major league career.

Gregory Alan Maddux (b. April 14, 1966), also known as “Mad Dog” and “The Professor,” is a former professional baseball pitcher from Texas.

Greg’s MLB journey started with the Chicago Cubs after they drafted him in the 1984 MLB draft.

In his 23 professional playing seasons, Greg played for several teams, including the Cubs, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Diego Padres.

The public recognized Mad Dog for the accomplishments he gained during his time with the Atlanta Braves and .

Similarly, the player won the World Series with the Braves against the Cleveland Indians in 1995.

The professor is also the only pitcher in the history of MLB to have won at least 15 games for 17 straight seasons.

Eventually, after he retired from the major leagues, Greg served as a special assistant to the general manager for the Cubs and Texas Rangers.

Greg Maddux grew up with his older brother, Michael Ausley Maddux, also known as Mike.

Mike was born on August 27, 1961, in Dayton, Ohio. He is also a former pitcher currently serving as pitching coach for the Texas Rangers of the MLB.

Despite being selected in the 1979 MLB draft, Mike attended the University of Texas.

His MLB journey started with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1982, and he later played with nine teams, including the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Additionally, after retiring as a professional player, he started his coaching journey with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2003. Mike spent about six seasons as the pitching coach for the Brewers. 

Besides, he also coached teams like Washington Nationals, St. Louis Cardinals, and Texas Rangers.

Mike re-signed with the Rangers for his second stint on November 23, 2026, after previously serving for the franchise from 2009-15.

The two Maddux brothers were pitching experts and have 394 pitching victories combined. However, the younger Maddux and the Hall of Fame pitcher has 355 of them.

Mike has shown his brilliance as one of the best pitching coaches. He put together two exceptional seasons with pitchers like C.J. Wilson and Cliff Lee.

When Mike was with the Rangers during his first stint, he invited his brother as a special assistant during Spring Training.

Mike was accompanied by his brother in camp and was well aware of the values his brother brought to the table, considering Greg’s experience and achievements.

Greg Maddux’s Achievements

Greg won 18 Gold Gloves, a record for any position, and was chosen for the National League All-Star team eight times.

Similarly, Gregory won four ERA titles and led the NL in shutouts in five different seasons.

Greg ranked 39 on the 100 Greatest Baseball Players list by ‘The Sporting News’ in 1999.

Similarly, Maddux’s jersey No. 31 was retired by the Cubs on May 3, 2009, and by the Atlanta Braves on July 31, 2009.

Moreover, Gregory was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on January 8, 2014.
