Olli Juolevi | Professional Career

In 2012-13, Juolevi started playing junior hockey in Finland for the Jokerit U16 team at 14. He played for the Jokerit U20 team in the Jr. the following year.

He was named to the league’s First All-Star Team and awarded Rookie of the Year after scoring 32 points (6 goals and 26 assists) in 44 matches.

Similarly, Juolevi was chosen 45th overall in the 2015 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft during the off-season by the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Shortly afterward, Juolevi made a promise to the Knights, leaving his junior career in Finland.

Ontario Hockey League (OHL)

Juolevi grew up in the Jokerit program before moving to North America in 2015 to play major junior hockey with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

He was drafted by the Canucks after one season with London. Either way, he puts the pressure on it and puts it on thick.

A strong and balanced skater can rush the puck with ease or backcheck with haste through the neutral zone. He uses his height but understands and plays within his physical limits to his benefit.

Moreover, Olli makes his presence known instead of playing overly aggressively by showcasing his high-end playmaking skill and puck possession.

All in all cases, a well-rounded blueliner who thrives under pressure and can be trusted.

Juolevi ranked third among OHL rookie defensemen with 42 points (9 goals and 33 assists) in 57 games and 13th among defensemen overall in 2015-16.

He was selected to the OHL Third All-Star Team and Second All-Rookie Team.

In addition, he added 14 points (3 goals and 11 assists) in 18 matches during the 2016 OHL playoffs, ranking second among all defencemen, as the Knights won the J Ross Robertson Cup as OHL Champions.

2016 NHL Draft – Part of Vancouver Canucks

Juolevi recorded seven assists in four matches with the Knights advancing to the 2016 Memorial Cup and was named to the tournament’s All-Star Team, leading London to a national championship.

Scouts highly valued Juolevi after playing a key role in London’s championship season. Among draft-eligible players playing in North America, NHL Central Scouting rated him sixth, praising his offensive play.

He was also the first defenceman chosen during the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, fifth overall by the Vancouver Canucks.

Similarly, Juolevi signed his first professional deal on August 5, 2016, by agreeing with the Canucks to a three-year entry-level contract.

Juolevi was sidelined for the remainder of the year due to knee surgery after scoring 13 points in 18 games in his first AHL season.

Juolevi was sent to Utica again to start the 2019-20 season following his injury-shortened season. In November 2019, Juolevi sustained an injury again after 5 points in 14 games, although he returned three weeks later.

Furthermore, Olli would appear in 45 Utica games, scoring 25 points, until the 2019-20 AHL season was suspended and later canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Debut with the Canucks

During the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs, Juolevi made his NHL debut with the Canucks, appearing in Vancouver’s Qualifying Round series against the Minnesota Wild.

In that match, Vancouver won 5-4 in overtime to defeat Minnesota and move on to the First Round, and he played 6:16.

Juolevi won a spot on Vancouver’s roster out of training camp the following season for the first time in his career.[12] In a 7-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators, he scored his first career goal on January 25, 2026.

Trade to the Florida Panthers

The Canucks traded Juolevi to the Panthers on October 10, 2026. However, he remained on the team’s roster as a healthy scratch.

Before making his Panthers debut against the Arizona Coyotes on December 10, 2026, he was assigned to the Charlotte Checkers. After going scoreless in over ten games, the Panthers placed him on waivers on March 5, 2026.

The next day, Detroit Red Wings claimed him off the waivers.

International Games

At the 2016 World Junior Championships, where they won gold on January 5, 2016, Juolevi played for Finland. He was appointed to the All-Star team of the tournament to recognize his play.

Likewise, for the 2017 World Junior Championships, Juolevi was named Finland’s captain.

Unfortunately, Finland could not equal their previous year’s performance in the competition, finishing ninth and beating Team Latvia to prevent relegation.

Olli Juolevi was out for a season due to knee surgery.

Olli Juolevi continues, but not in a positive way, to defy standards. The first-round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in 2016, No. 5 overall, was unable last season to earn a roster spot with the team and was loaned back to his native Finland.

So far this year, Juolevi has mainly played with the Utica Comets, their AHL affiliate.

The young defender sustained an injury to his leg, but he only missed a few weeks. Last week, Juolevi also returned to work with the Comets.

Yet, this evening, the Canucks revealed that Juolevi had undergone surgery on his knee today and will miss the rest of the season.

The truth behind the incident is that the current top pick will go another season without making his NHL debut and could wait much longer if Juolevi’s knee injury was more serious than initially suggested or if the team was playing it safe.

Vancouver hopes that he will make a complete recovery by training camp, but he is not guaranteed a roster spot in any way and will most likely have to prove that he is game-ready by starting another season in the minors.

Recovery

The team press release suggested that the medical staff of the Canucks thought that “surgery was the best option for the long-term health and career of Juolevi,”

However, the decision still had to consider whether the team thought they would need him this season or early next season, evidently with no response.

If there was any doubt about whether defenseman Quinn Hughes of the University of Michigan had bypassed Juolevi as the top defensive prospect for Vancouver, the debate is now over.

With Canucks next season, Hughes, the seventh overall pick in June, is expected to move into a starting spot, if not sooner.

Moreover, the future of Juolevi is on a question mark, with its growth now marred by injury, in addition to underwhelming results.

The Video Game Addiction

Canucks prospect Olli Juolevi is not the unidentified player who will miss out on an NHL career because of a video-game addiction, despite some very bad claims out there.

Dhiren Mahiban, who has written for the Canadian Press, the New York Times, or elsewhere about sports, said his sources told him that Olli Juolevi was the player in a query.
