Splitter began his professional career in 1999. In 2000, he started to play in Spain’s top-level league, called the Liga ACB. Tiago became a naturalized citizen of Spain in 2004.

Furthermore, he became the Spanish Supercup tournament’s Most Valuable Player in 2006 and 2007. He also became part of the All-EuroLeague First Team of the EuroLeague’s 2007–2008.

Reportedly, the contract would keep Splitter in the Spanish ACB League throughout the 2009–2010 NBA season.

Moreover, the contract provided Tiago to make eight times more than what the NBA rookie scale salary cap would have made with the San Antonio Spurs at that time.
