The Belarusian professional tennis player Victoria Azarenka is a former world No. 1 in singles and is a two Grand Slam singles title holder at the 2012 and 2013 Australian Open.

She has won a total of 21 WTA singles titles and claimed the world No. 1 title for the first time on 20 January 2012.

Victoria was the year-end No. 1 in 2012 and held the top ranking for a total of 51 weeks.

She recently competed in the 2026 Australian Open in Melbourne but lost to Kazakhstani professional tennis player Elena Rybakina in the semifinals on January 26, 2026.

Victoria had not played in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam since 2016 because of her pregnancy, injuries, and off-court problems, but she’s slowly been returning to good form and has continued her performances from the end of 2026 through the Australian Open 2026.

 Early Life

Victoria Azárenka was born on July 31, 1989, in Minsk, Soviet Union, to her father, Fedor Azarenka, and mother, Alla Azarenka.

She grew up with her only sibling, Max Azarenka. Nevertheless, there is no information regarding his whereabouts.

Victoria always had a fascination for tennis. As a child, she idolized the German professional tennis player Steffi Graf.

This led her to pursue it as a career. Her real tennis persuasion came at age 15 when she moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, from Minsk to train.

After moving to Scottsdale, Nikolai Khabibulin, an NHL goalie, and his wife, Victoria Khabibulin, helped young Victoria with her training.

Career

On November 2003, Victoria debuted on the ITF Junior Circuit in Israel, winning one doubles title with Olga Govortsova.

Two years after turning pro, in 2005, she clinched two junior Grand Slam titles.

The same year ITF named her the 2005 World Champion making her the first Belarusian to do so.

She was seeded 26th at the 2008 Australian Open. It went well for the first two matches, but in the third, she lost to the defending champion .

However, she won the title in 2012 and 2013, becoming the first Belarusian player to win a Grand Slam tournament singles title.

Following the breakup, she began seeing Billy McKeague, son of Chase McKeague (chairman of the investment group Chase and Company).

The Belarusian tennis star Victoria was asked to take off a shirt she was wearing in a bizarre scene before her match against Elena Rybakina at the Australian Open 2026.

As soon as she walked out onto the court, the chair umpire Alison Hughes asked her to remove the PSG soccer jersey she was wearing.

She has previously explained how she wears the Paris Saint Germaine jersey for her son, who wants to play for the French club someday.

Victoria had been spotted with the same shirt a few times at Melbourne Park for a post-match interview.

The 36-year-old had been planning to don it to warm up against Elena, but umpire Alison had other ideas.

Hughes could be seen ordering Victoria to remove the jersey, asking that she warm up in her playing outfit instead.
