Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said the failed European Super League (ESL) is a “closed chapter” after his club beat Aston Villa to get closer to becoming Premier League champions.

The City was one of 12 clubs registered to part with the ESL on Sunday but withdrew on Tuesday. After widespread criticism of the proposals, which would not have been possible for anyone to promote or reduce divisions in English football.

“As a club, we embrace and learn and focus on the reason why we are here,” said Guardiola. The team needs eight points in five games to become English champions for the third time in four seasons.

“The last chapter closed chapter. Owners don’t need to apologize to me. I know them; I know what they’re like.”

City’s victory leaves them 11 points adrift of Manchester United, with Guardiola claiming his side is “very close” to the title.

However, they were nervous when , who was in the middle of a red card just before half-time, was challenged by Jacob Ramsey.

But Villa wasted their chances when was sent off for 11 minutes in the second half following two bookings in three minutes.

Managers had been moving forward just 20 seconds later when aimed a shot past Ederson after a low cross from Ollie Watkins.

Impressive finished City’s fine game of equalizers before Rodri took the lead after Bernardo Silva’s cross.

City took a 2-1 lead when they dropped to 10 men. But Villa could not use the extra player and gave them a small treat when they were ten players.

The City was among the first to announce its withdrawal from ESL on Tuesday evening. There was no repetition of protests that showed angry fans protesting ahead of Liverpool’s game in Leeds on Monday. Chelsea’s home game against Brighton on Tuesday and Tottenham’s meeting Southampton on Wednesday morning.

This game also highlighted the fun and excitement of the Premier League game against City. After leaving the goal behind, it was fun to watch.

Their equalizer started with goalkeeper Ederson hitting a fine 50 yards on the left wing, where Olexandr Zinchenko played for the excellent Foden. The 20-year-old held the ground low for Riyad Mahrez as Algeria pulled off Silva, scattered on the right side, and Foden netted his pull-back.

The second goal was another that worked well as Rodri came in strong from Silva’s other assist.

Not only has City scored the most goals in the Premier League, but they also have an excellent defensive record. They have successfully managed to prevent Villa from taking a big step towards another title in the second half.

After the game, City manager Pep Guardiola said of Foden: “This boy is growing up. His influence on our games is huge. He becomes a determined player.

“Phil is currently becoming a very important player. His impact in the last three is very important.”

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “We started well. It was something we talked about. We have one of the best players in the league who can follow after defending opponents in Ollie Watkins’ position.

“We defended well. It could have been a very disappointing win. Cashy will learn about that. Secondly, the booking was stupid and reckless.

“Some of Manchester City’s games were brilliant. They taught us sometimes.

“I’ve been involved in professional football for 34 years. And I haven’t seen the ball come together as it did this week. That shows how angry people were with the ESL programs.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola told BBC Match of the Day: “It’s not the beginning I wanted to see. But we have responded very well, we have played very well without football. Ten out of 11, we have responded well. And we have played very well.”

On John Stones’ red card: “He’s late, but we have no intention of kicking him. He wouldn’t have gone there on purpose. He’s not aggressive with his feet, and he’s late. It’s hard to play for many minutes. It’s good to read to him.

“After the game, it didn’t seem to bother us, we were focused, yes, everyone was worried, but the players were watching the game. We are very close. The Cup final with the Champions League and then Crystal Palace.”
